Healthy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving begins a six week food orgy that causes so many people to face the new year, fatter but not wiser. Whether you are in the process of losing weight or maintaining weight loss, you can have a delicious Thanksgiving dinner with no regrets.

Like many of you, I have guests who are not in the weight loss process so there is a mixture of options. Jennifer had the best suggestion for dessert; choose a pie that you don’t like. For me that’s anything peanut butter.

            Our Thanksgiving Menu:

Low Fat & Green: Turkey  Grilled Vegetables (Southern Living recipe),  Green Beans & Pearl Onions, Lean Meatballs, Spring Green Salad with Vinaigrette, Medifast Vanilla Pudding (with one spoonful of Pumpkin) and cinnamon on top (or dash of Davinci Sugar Free Pumpkin Pie flavoring)

Not Low Fat or Green:  Bread Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Pumpkin Pie

As you can see, there is plenty of food to enjoy without going calorie load crazy. In the afternoon, instead of lulling yourself in front to the TV, get outside and take a walk or play games outdoors with the children.

For many years my daughters and I started Thanksgiving Day around 8am amid thousands of runners at the annual Times Turkey Trot race. The exercise and fun of the race pumps up the metabolism before sitting down to lunch.  Then after lunch, we take down the Christmas decorations and begin to deck the halls.  Find new ways to add activity and fun into the holiday so that being “thankful” is about more food.
