Heart, Brain and Fat - What’s the link?
Obesity is known as a risk factor in heart disease. When the body is carrying around too much fat, all systems slow down to manage the load that becomes the slippery slope to metabolic syndrome, diabetes and high blood pressure. Dr. William Milberg says that cognitive diseases (memory impairment) are closely linked to heart health. As a research psychologist with the Boston VA who studies issues in geriatric neuropsychology, Dr. Milberg suggests that the cognitive problems are not due just to getting older. According to Milberg, “Once you ‘re on the road toward impaired cardiac and metabolic function, you may also be on the road to impaired brain function.”
Whether you are decades or days away from retirement, it’s never too late to lose weight, get within your proper BMI (body mass index) range for your height and experience improved heart health.
If you had the power to avoid a triple bypass heart surgery or years of assisted living for dementia care would you do it? Ok… let’s get started.
