Lean & Green Cuisine: Starring Veggies
Here’s a favorite recipe for Lean & Green Cuisine where Grilled Vegetables take the Lead Roll. It’s simple, inexpensive and quick to fix.
1 green or red bell pepper
1 yellow squash
1 zucchini squash
2-3 large mushrooms
Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing (no cal or low cal)
Meat or fish of choice, cooked and ready to serve
Wash all vegetables before slicing. Cut pepper and squashes...
Lure of Food Cues
Food is linked to cues from culture, family and environment. Think for a minute, where do you go that has a certain food as a “first thought”? Movies = tub of buttered popcorn. Rushing out in the morning = greasy drive-thru egg/cheese biscuit. Sending a card to Grandma = trip to bakery for similar (but not as good) sugar cookies. Dinner at an Italian restaurant = half dozen bread sticks while...

Changing Habits
Have you made the decision to get down to a healthy weight, re-shape your body and change your life for the better? Great, now you have to make this commitment stick for more than a few days.
First, decide that there is no going back. Your old habits of disease are what weighs you down and holds you back from having the life you want. Let them go.
Sure, it can be difficult to say goodbye to...
Food-Mood Connection Tips
Create a personal power statement to support changes in your food-mood connection. Here is what I suggest to my health coaching clients:
I reject fear and fat as I nurture my body to my ideal weight.
Notice that this statement is POSITIVE. The diet mentality is filled with negatives (can’t eat this, don’t do that, never do… ). Our brains work better focused on what is...

Healthy Choices at Restaurants
Reality check, some restaurants are better than others for low fat and fresh foodchoices. Fortunately, many restaurants, even local places, have web sites with menu information. Make the effort to check it out before you go. When you arrive, ask questions about how an item is prepared. Request that your food be served without gravy or have it grilled instead of fried.
Ask for a second...
Shopping for Lean & Green Meals

New Year's parties - the final food sabotage
New Year’s parties can be glorious celebrations or the final food sabotage of the year. Here are some suggestions for enjoying the party without bringing home regrets:
1) Have a shake, fruit drink or hot cocoa half hour before leaving for the party. That does wonders for taking the edge off appetite and avoiding frantic eating at the buffet table.
When you arrive at the party, take time...

Surviving the Fat Ship
Before leaving on the four day Cruise with the Coaches to Cozumel, I heard from several people, “Go on a cruise, you gain 10 pounds.” Why accept such negative programming? I believe that it’s possible to go on a cruise without gaining weight. So let’s see what actually happened.
Thursday - - - Upon boarding the Carnival Fun Ship, the food orgy was underway on the Lido Deck. I passed the...

Heart, Brain and Fat - What's the link?
Obesity is known as a risk factor in heart disease. When the body is carrying around too much fat, all systems slow down to manage the load that becomes the slippery slope to metabolic syndrome, diabetes and high blood pressure. Dr. William Milberg says that cognitive diseases (memory impairment) are closely linked to heart health. As a research psychologist with the Boston VA who studies...
The Right "Fast Food" for a busy week
Of all the weight loss methods I tried, success came when I found the safe, simple program that fit my busy life. That’s why I say that all you need to be successful is “water and commitment”.
Remember to keep a packet in your car, brief case or office desk. I stash Cappuccino in my car and briefcase plus a bar in my purse. Now that’s going out into a fat world armed with...

What you say is as important as what you eat!
In several health coaching conversations recently, I have emphasized the importance of “self talk” to support the desire to lose weight. Too often, we replay words that lead to sabotage. Here are some examples:
Sabotage Talk: “I feel so deprived when my family eats bread (dessert, etc) and I can’t have any.”
Success Talk: “I can have that bread (dessert,...
